2019 WAFU Cup of Nations : Host Senegal reaches final

Matchday 10 of the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations was a day of high drama in Thies as it saw Senegal and Guinea qualify for the Cup and Plate finals respectively.
The first match of the day saw a strike from Daouda Camara hand Guinea a 1-0 win over Liberia in the Plate semifinals of WAFU 2019.
It was a highly entertaining match with both sides quite aggressive in attack, but it was also a match littered with wasted opportunities in front of goal.
The opening half, in particular, saw Guinea’s Camara miss a couple of easy chances but he made up for it with the game’s only goal in the 39th minute. Liberia tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but they were unable to penetrate the Syli Nationale defence and thus exited the tournament.
Following the outcome, Guinea will take part in the final of the Plate competition on October 12 against Cape Verde.
The second game of the day saw a consummate performance from Senegal as they beat Mali 2-0 in the Cup semifinal.
The first half saw the home nation controlling the flow of play, but they were unable to convert that dominance into goals. That, however, was not the case in the second half with Ibrahima Drame turning home a low cross from Ousseynou Niang to open the scoring in the 51st minute.
The Lions of Teranga put the result beyond doubt in the 82nd minute courtesy of a penalty goal from Elhadji Madicke Kane, after the spot-kick was won by Drame.
The match ended on a sour note for Mali when second half substitute Ibourahima Sidibe was shown a straight red card in the 84th minute following a tackle from behind on Niang.
Following the outcome, Senegal will take part in the final of the Cup competition on October 13 against either Ghana who are the defending champions of WAFU.
